The Tetley is a pioneering centre for contemporary art located in the art deco headquarters of the former Tetley Brewery in Leeds, UK. After a number of years creating exhibition identities for the gallery, the studio were invited to overhaul the building's signage, website, print and exhibition material, creating an expressive identity system which supports the values of the organisation.
Two typefaces for display and general use echo the gallery's industrial heritage. Separat offers a playful tone of voice, while Founders gives a clean and contemporary take on classic grotesques. A vibrant colour palette of three variations defines different aspects of the institution, covering the gallery, Bar & Kitchen and family activities.
All print and digital material applies a grid system evolved from the building's celebrated architecture, utilising the window structure synonymous to Art Deco style. This simple yet adaptable grid provides the framework for a dynamic identity, allowing components to move fluidly within the grid depending on imagery and content.
